Why Chromatique
A finish that lasts, because it is properly prepared
How long a powder coat lasts is decided before the powder goes on. Here is what our way of working includes.
Zirconium pretreatment
Ardrox degreaser, a rinse, then Gardobond zirconium: two BASF products applied by spray. The Gardobond dries in place, with no final rinse. The powder bonds better and the metal resists corrosion better.
Racking and masking
40 rolling racks to hang almost any shape of part, or batches of small parts, about twenty per rack. We mask mating surfaces and protect threads as you specify.
Every colour
RAL colours and our suppliers’ catalogues. Solid, metallic, transparent, textured and wrinkle finishes.
Up to three coats
Our standard finish is a colour coat plus a clear top coat. A primer or a third coat is added when needed.
Oven cure
Parts are cured in our GFS oven, with a usable space 9 ft wide, 11 ft deep and 9 ft high. The powder melts and hardens into an even film.
One part or a full run
Four wheels for an individual or a production run for a manufacturer: the process is the same. Three batches a day, about 66 a month, and the capacity to double with an evening and night shift.
Before and after
From bare metal to a matte bronze finish
Wheels prepared, then powder coated in our shop.

Our process
The process in short

Racking and masking
Each part is hung on a suitable rack. Surfaces to protect are masked.

Preparation and pretreatment
Ardrox degreaser, a rinse and Gardobond zirconium (BASF), which dries in place.

Powder application
In one of our two booths, electrically charged powder is sprayed and clings to the part.

Oven cure
Heat melts and hardens the powder. The finish is ready as soon as the part has cooled.

Frequently asked questions
What people ask us most
Five quick answers. The full list of 26 questions is on the Services page.
What is powder coating and how does it work?
Powder coating is a finish applied dry, with no solvent. The powder, made of resin and pigments, picks up an electric charge in the spray gun. The metal part is grounded, so the powder clings to it evenly, even in recesses.
The part then goes into the oven. Heat melts the powder, which hardens into a continuous film that is thicker and tougher than ordinary liquid paint. At Chromatique, every part is first degreased, rinsed and pretreated with zirconium so the finish bonds well.
How much does powder coating cost?
The price depends on five things: the size of the parts, the quantity, the preparation needed (sandblasting, stripping an old coating), the colour and number of coats, and the masking required.
So two parts of the same size do not always cost the same. A new part in bare metal takes less work than a rusted or previously painted one, and a three-coat finish takes longer than a solid colour.
The minimum order is $350 before taxes. The quote is free. Fill in the quote request with the type of parts, the quantity, the dimensions and the colour you want: you get a price in less than 24 hours.
How long does it take to get my parts coated?
Our standard turnaround is 5 business days per order. Rush orders can be done in 1 to 2 business days, with a rush fee, when the colour is in stock. A large order with custom colours and several coats takes 10 to 15 business days.
A special colour that is not in stock at our suppliers has to be ordered, which can add time. You get your quote in less than 24 hours (business days), whatever the complexity of the project, with a realistic timeline: if a date or a request is beyond what we can do, we tell you right away. If you have a deadline, enter it in the form.
Which colours and finishes are available?
Almost every colour exists as a powder. We work with the catalogues of Prismatic Powders, Protech, Erie Powder Coatings and TIGER Coatings, among others, as well as RAL colours.
For finishes, you can choose solid, metallic, transparent, textured or wrinkle, in gloss, satin or matte. Our standard finish is a colour coat plus a clear top coat; a primer or a third coat is added when needed.
See the Colours and suppliers page to browse the catalogues, then give us the name or code of the colour.
Do you take single parts from individuals as well as production runs?
Yes. We work with individuals who bring in four wheels or one automotive part, and with manufacturers who send us recurring runs. The process is the same in both cases: pretreatment, application, cure.
We run three batches a day, about 66 a month, and can double that capacity with an evening and night shift. Our 40 rolling racks take almost any shape of part, or batches of small parts, about twenty per rack.
In the quote form, enter the quantity and choose “one-time order” or “recurring order”. For a production run, give the expected volume per month or per year: it lets us plan the racks and offer you a suitable price.
